Like the VM600, the new VM600Mk2 system is designed as a centralized system, with a well-thought-out modular structure allowing smart function combinations that enable complex systems to be built from a minimum number of modules.
From system configuration to retrofit, the VM600Mk2 "one module does it all" concept focuses on reducing the total cost of ownership and ease of use. It does this by avoiding over-complicated steps and giving users as much autonomy as possible – while still meeting the most demanding safety levels.
The flexibility offered by the VM600Mk2 system allows low to high channel density and easy configuration in order to interface with any measurement chain, such as relative and absolute vibration, position, dynamic pressure, speed, temperature, airgap, etc. This is especially beneficial for combined-cycle power plants which have a high number of measurement points from a wide range of different measurement chains.
This is an interesting feature because having all measurements brought to one central system consisting of fewer different types of module makes installation simpler and quicker. From a maintenance perspective, means having fewer spares parts and the modules themselves can be replaced very easily due to their automatic configuration capability. No configuration software is required, resulting in a shorter mean time to repair so normal asset operations can be restored quickly.
The new MPC4Mk2 + IOC4Mk2 module extends flexibility even further by including condition monitoring capabilities. It is designed to deliver advanced machinery protection and condition monitoring using one module, while keeping these different functions completely segregated in accordance with stringent cybersecurity and API 670 requirements.
This is an interesting feature because it allows smart function combination by enabling combined systems (MPS and CMS) to be built with a minimum number of modules. At the same time, the high VM600Mk2 channel density reduces the number of racks required for large items of machinery and complex installations.
As a result, the VM600Mk2 system and MPC4Mk2 module cover all of the machinery monitoring requirements for most power plants. This leaves the dedicated XMx16 condition monitoring modules for the most demanding condition monitoring applications or for when only condition monitoring is required. We consider it to represent a 30% material cost reduction compared to a system having separate modules for machinery protection and condition monitoring.
The system is compatible with the VibroSight software which uses two distinct and completely separate applications: VibroSight Protect for MPS and VibroSight Capture for CMS. In this way, total segregation of machinery protection functionality and condition monitoring functionality is assured.
This is an interesting feature because it helps avoid false or missed trips, and other issues, due to inadvertent or unintended machinery protection system changes. The segregation guarantees that the protection system functionality will not be influenced in any way by the normal usage of the condition monitoring system (and vice versa). It is a valuable defense measure against potential human error.
The one module does it all design concept provides a reduced total cost of ownership over the entire lifetime of the VM600Mk2 system thanks to its flexibility, simplicity and high operational availability.
Accordingly, the system is recommended for machinery monitoring applications (MPS and/or CMS) that require the central processing of a wide range of inputs from a variety of critical assets such as gas, steam and hydro turbines, high-value rotating machines, as well as balance of plant (BOP) equipment such as compressors, gearboxes, motors, pumps and fans.
